Teton Machine Company was born in the early 1950s in the basement of a house in Jackson, Wyoming. Although I wasn’t there, I’m sure despite working conditions including smoke, oil, sawdust (to soak up the oil) and equipment with exposed mechanisms, potential employees were plentiful. The fifties were a prosperous time in America but a manufacturing job was still in high demand.
Times have changed. Teton is located in a brand new facility in Payette, Idaho. Smoking is not allowed in the building. Machine tools are equipped with technology to capture any airborne liquids and safeguards to make sure no one is exposed to operating tools. The building is spacious, well-lit and controlled to an ideal temperature in both the summer and winter. Instead of manufacturing simple turned parts on cam operated screw machines we’re producing complex aerospace, medical device and other cutting edge industry parts with an AS9100 / ISO 9001 certified quality system. Finding the right employees has become much more difficult.
Recently Teton had the honor of hosting the Machine Tool Technology group from the College of Western Idaho. Hosting these students provided them the opportunity to observe what they’re studying in practical application. It also gave Teton the opportunity to meet them and learn more about their aspirations and career vision. It’s a valuable opportunity for both.
Teton is proud to offer competitive wages with added incentive pay, a very comprehensive benefits package including a 401(k) program with a generous match and accumulation of wealth in the form of company stock through our Employee Stock Ownership Plan. Through ESOP every employee accumulates company stock in additional to their wages and benefits. The program works in much the same way as a typical 401(k) plan including a probationary period and vesting schedule. For people of my “vintage” health insurance and retirement security are hot topics. I’m not sure the message resonates as well with the student population.
The students at CWI represent the future of manufacturing in America. Keeping American manufacturing competitive on the world stage will require continuous innovation and improvement. Teton has changed dramatically in the last fifty years. The potential for the next fifty years is limited only by our imaginations.
