In the machining world a remnant of raw material produced while cutting desired geometry is called a chip. Chips come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes depending on raw material, machining technique, tools and many other variables. Chip management is a very mundane but extremely important component of high precision machining.
Chip management is extremely important in high precision production machining
Methods of Chip Management
Chips can entangle and break tools, lodge themselves inside collets to deform material as the collet clamps down and find a million different ways to ruin an otherwise stable and high performing machining process. As machines have become more capable, producing complex parts in one operation, chip management has become more difficult. Machinists use strategically directed high pressure coolant, tools designed to deliver high pressure fluid directly to the surface being cut and creative direction of air pressure attempting to evacuate chips. In many cases the only solution is to interrupt the process and manually remove chips from sensitive areas. Chip management increases time spent producing parts thereby increasing cost.
Low Frequency Vibration
Teton’s latest machine tool addition is equipped with Low Frequency Vibration (LFV) cutting technology. LFV reduces the size of problematic chips making them easier and less time consuming to manage. In addition to LFV our new Cincom L32 Type XII has the capacity for up to forty tools, live tooling on both the front and back spindle as well as a B axis to produce compound angles.
